Q: I need to replace a part in my Dell laptop, how do I find the correct replacement?
A: The first step you will need to take is to locate your Dell part number. This number is sometimes difficult to locate, and some parts may have multiple part numbers on them, leading to extra confusion. Using this page, I will show you how to find and identify the correct HP part number for certain parts.
Here is an example of how to find the Dell part number on your Dell motherboard:
The Dell part number is hidden in the other string of numbers on this sticker. The part number of this motherboard is MD666. You can always find the dell part number immediately following the CN- on a dell part sticker.
Here is another example showing you how to find the dell part number.
The part number of this modem is K8735. You can see it following the DP/N as well as the CN- in this case. Dell part numbers are often represented after the "DP/N" on a part as well.
Q: I want to replace the motherboard in my laptop, where is this number located?
A: Dell part numbers on motherboards are most often located underneath one of the DIMM slots of RAM. If you are unable to find it there, you may have to remove the motherboard from the laptop to find the sticker. Make sure that the sticker you are looking for is more directly on the motherboard and not on an attached part.
Here is an example of a Dell Motherboard part number (H5935) located below this RAM slot:
Q: There are multiple Dell part numbers on my motherboard. How do I know which one I need?
A: The easiest way to figure out which dell part number belongs to the motherboard is to simply Google the part number and look for related results. If the part number is giving you pictures and links to a part that is not the motherboard, then you know you do not have the right part number. There can be multiple dell part numbers on the board for various other attached parts, such as, a modem, heat sink, express card cage, or a drive bay.
Here is an example of a dell motherboard with extra parts attached. Each have their own dell part number, the heat sink (2N403) and the modem (Y0231).
Here is a different example of a WiFi card with 2 part numbers:
In this case, there is also a Broadcom part number for the card. You can see the dell part number D9002, as well as the Broadcom model number BCM94318MPAGH. I always recommend that you replace Dell parts using the Dell part number first if possible. If you are unable to locate a replacement part using the Dell part number, then you should use the model number of a part instead.
Q: I'm trying to replace the LCD for my laptop, however, there are no Dell part numbers! What do I do?
A: You may find that some parts, like LCDs, do not always have Dell part numbers on them. In these cases, you must correctly identify the manufacturers part numbers on the part to find a compatible replacement. Here is a LCD that does not include a Dell part number.
You can see the outlined part number on this LCD are LP156WH1 (TL)(A3). This number will find you a suitable replacement. You may find that upon looking for one to purchase, you see it listed for a different laptop model than your own. Do not worry, some parts are used in many different laptops and are compatible in many different models. As long as you match the part number you are replacing, the part you purchase will be compatible.
